Bread of the Dead (Pan de Muerte) Recipe
Ingredients:
1 pkg of yeast (dry)
1/2 c of water (lukewarm)
5 c of flour; sifted
1 tsp of salt
3/4 c of sugar (granulated)
1 c of butter (unsalted); melted then cooled
6 pcs of eggs; beaten slightly
2 Tbsps of water (anise)
2 Tbsps of water (orange blossom)
1 Tbsp of orange zest; grated
1-1/2 c of powdered sugar; sifted
1 tsp of vanilla extract
Pink sugar crystals
Milk
Instructions:
Dissolve the dry yeast with water; add (1 cup) flour. Gently stir making a (soft) sponge then drape with cloth; let it rise till volume has doubled.
Save (1/2 cup) of flour. Place the mixture of yeast inside bowl; add remaining sifted flour, salt, butter, sugar, eggs, waters, and zests. Mix them well. Use the saved flour in dusting the surface. Roll the dough above it then knead gently. Place inside buttered bowl; let it rise for an hour and a half.
Preheat the oven at (350 degrees F); shape the dough in 9 inch round pan. Place inside preheated oven and bake for half an hour. Let it cool then spread frosting on top then sprinkle pink crystals.
For the frosting, mix powdered sugar & vanilla and add enough amount of milk for the frosting to become thick.
